STCU grows to 80,000

GU grad student is milestone member

Carla Hashley may be studying organizational leadership, but she followed 79,999 others when it came to picking a new financial institution.

The 24-year-old Gonzaga University graduate student is the 80,000th person to join STCU, one of the fastest-growing credit unions around. She made the switch March 18, after growing dissatisfied with service at her national bank.

Fact is, a lot of folks are choosing STCU for its great member services and sound financial practices - not to mention the free cookies offered at our branches on teacher paydays.

Spokane Teachers Credit Union was started in 1934 with $4,000 in assets. Founded by teachers, STCU grew to 15,000 members in its first 50 years.

Today, STCU is a full-service financial institution open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or goes to school in Washington or in Idaho's Kootenai or Bonner counties. Yet it remains true to its roots as a non-profit cooperative owned by its members and overseen by a volunteer board of directors. For three consecutive years, STCU has been voted the region's best financial institution by readers of The Inlander newspaper.

Growth in recent years has come rapidly to STCU, which topped 70,000 members in 2007; 78,000 at the end of last year; and now 80,000 just three months into 2009.

Welcome aboard, Carla! You're joining a proud tradition.
