Money up the chimney. Money out the attic. Money through the windows.
An inefficient home leaks dollars all winter long.
Take that furnace in the basement... If it's over 20 years old, then there's a good chance it may be 65 percent efficient, or even less. You could save hundreds of dollars a year by replacing it with one that's 90 percent efficient.
Of course, replacing a furnace is a big investment. But now may be the best time possible to take that step - and not just because interest rates are at near-historic lows.
As part of the national effort to rebuild the economy, the federal government will reimburse you up to $1,500 for qualifying furnaces, windows, storm doors, solar panels and energy efficiency improvements.
And there's also money available for first-time homebuyers, and for those buying some highly efficient cars. Sorting it all out can be a headache. Luckily, the various offers are summed up for you in the summer issue of STCU's quarterly magazine, OSI.
Other stories you'll find inside this issue of OSI:
OSI arrives at members' homes this month, so you can take a copy to huckleberry camp, the lake cabin, or into that basement that's so cool in the summer (before the old furnace starts cranking out BTUs).
Or, you can read the online version now.
