[May 5, 2008]

Join STCU's Cheney Branch on May 16-17 to help raise money for cancer research during the two-day American Cancer Society Relay For Life®.

How you can help

Purchase raffle tickets to win a quilt or make a cash donation to Relay for Life at STCU's Cheney Branch, 2718 First St., or by calling STCU at (509) 326-1954 or (208) 619-4000. Please have your account number ready.

A drawing will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17, for four different quilts. Tickets are $1. One ticket enters you in all four drawings. Need not be present to win.
The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, with a cancer survivors lap, and continues through the night until 10 a.m. Saturday. Members from each relay team will take turns walking or running around Woodward Field track, while live music, dancing, Frisbee, volleyball, movies, and even a beauty contest go on through the night.

The highlight of the evening is the Luminary Ceremony, where candle-lit paper bags line the track with messages of hope for those fighting cancer, and loving thoughts for those who were lost to the disease.

Join the relay. Come to watch. Make a donation. Thanks for your support!

History of the Relay for Life

Relay for Life began in 1985 when Tacoma surgeon, Dr Gordy Klatt, merged his love for running with a fundraiser for the local American Cancer Society. Klatt collected donations from people who joined him on a 24-hour, nonstop run or walk around a nearby university track. The event raised $27,000 to fight cancer.

The following year, 19 teams joined in the Relay for Life. Since then, relays have been held all over the country, raising millions of dollars for cancer research. Visit the Relay for Life website to learn more.
