[May 15, 2008]

The royal court of the Spokane Lilac Festival has named the Teachers of the Year for their inspiration and contribution to excellence in education. STCU sponsors the award, now in its sixth year.

Representatives of the festival and STCU presented the awards in April and May at the schools of the seven local teachers. The teachers will ride in the Teacher of the Year float at the 70th annual Lilac Festival Armed Forced Torchlight parade on May 17.

Recipients are:

Members of the 2008 Lilac Festival Salute to Service Royal Court nominated teachers who had a significant positive impact on their journey through high school.

"Mr. Schneider is the epitome of a great teacher," said Kaylee Van Gelder of University High School. "He sparked an interest for history inside me and inspired many with the passion that stems from his teaching."

"Mrs. Rieken made me realize I can do the things I didn't think I had the courage to do-that I will succeed in whatever I choose," said Alexandra Cozza of North Central.

The 2008 Teachers of the Year instruct a variety of subjects, from history to science, advanced calculus to track. They share a passion and a connection that inspires students to work harder and to give more. Congratulations!
