Switching from a bank to a credit union can really pay off, says Consumer Reports, a leading consumer advocacy magazine.

The publication -- which does not sell advertising to maintain objectivity when reviewing products and services -- reports in the March 2007 issue that:

• Credit union rates often beat local bank offerings.
• Regulatory changes make it possible for many people to join the credit union of choice.
• Credit unions offer home loans, certificates, insurance, and most other services found at banks.
• Credit unions are regulated, federally insured, and safe.
• Many people can join a credit union at their place of work. Learn more.
• Not surprisingly, the American Bankers Association is unhappy with the competition from credit unions. The association wants to strip credit unions of their tax-free status.
