Teacher wins gas-saving scooter

Liberty Lake Branch celebrates grand opening with Vespa giveaway

[July 24, 2008]

When Jeff Rachoy heard he had won the new, gas-saving Vespa at STCU's Liberty Lake Branch, he brought a trailer and the family to pick up the scooter.

Next, he plans to learn how to drive it.

"It's beautiful," Rachoy said as his children, Cohen, 3, and Olivia, 6, jumped aboard the Portofino-green bike. "But I don't know how to drive a scooter. I'm going to have to learn."

Newman Lake residents, Rachoy and his wife, Rachel, are both fourth-grade teachers in the Central Valley School District. He teaches at Liberty Lake Elementary; she at Ponderosa Elementary.

Rachoy entered the drawing to win the Vespa LXV 150 during the spring grand opening of the Liberty Lake Branch at the corner of Appleway and Madson Road, one mile east of the Interstate 90 interchange. The Italian-made scooter, with its fuel-efficient 70 mpg, was a symbol of STCU's celebration of its "green-designed" 12th branch location -- and a way to encourage others to think and act with greater environmental awareness.

"My wife called me while I was at the branch making a deposit," Rachoy said. "I told her I was filling out an entry form for this scooter I was going to win."

Three months later, Branch Manager Darla Sowl surprised Rachoy with the message that he had, indeed, won the Vespa.

"Always answer the phone when STCU calls!" he said.
