Protect your member number

Create a secret member ID to log into your STCU account

At STCU, we use your member number to identify checks, accounts, and your transactions. But some worry that member numbers are a little too public to be used for logging into online banking.

That's why the credit union now offers you a way to create a unique member ID to replace your member number for logging into your online banking account only. It's the ultimate in logon security, with no "forgot password" option for retrieving your member ID. The only place you'll use your secret member ID is at stcu.org to log into your STCU accounts.

How to set up your unique member ID

Creating a unique member ID is as easy as following these steps:

  1. Log into online or mobile banking (without using a challenge code) at stcu.org.
  2. On the left-hand column, click "Security" under the "Preferences" links.
  3. Click on the "Login ID" tab.
  4. Create a member ID that you will always remember, but no one else will know. Enter it in the "New Login ID" box.
  5. Click the "Submit Login ID Change" button.

Your member ID can be 4 to 30 characters, and certain special symbols shown on the Login ID page are allowed. Spaces are not allowed on your unique member ID, so if you want to create a phrase, use a hyphen or underscore to separate words. Example: "Open_sesame" or "Open-sesame" would be permitted; but "Open sesame" would not because of the space between the words.

Final considerations

Setting up a unique member ID makes your accounts more secure, but there are certain considerations you may want to weigh:

  • There is no going back. Once you replace your member number with a unique member ID, you cannot change it back later. Our online banking security system does not allow member IDs to be reused.
  • There is no self-service "Forgot Member ID" option. If you forget your member ID, please call STCU at (800) 858-3750 for help. If calling after hours, select option #2 for online banking help.
  • A change may affect others. Changing your member ID affects the ability of all joint account holders and others authorized to access your accounts. Please notify your spouse or other authorized users if you change your member ID.
