Final recipients surprised
by STCU classroom grants

[December 2, 2017]

A dozen educators from Spokane Public Schools were surprised in late November with $250 classroom grants from STCU.
In October, STCU announced the names of the first 70 winner randomly selected grant recipients from other public school districts. These final recipients, from Spokane Public Schools, made a total of 82 educators receiving $20,500.
Continuing a long tradition, STCU provided meals, refreshments and door prizes at back-to-school events for more than 6,500 educators and other staff in 21 school districts in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Most of the events were held in September and October, while the Spokane Public Schools benefits fair was held in November.
Classroom staff who attended those events entered STCU's drawings for $250 classroom grants. Recipients can spend their $250 grants on anything they believe will enhance students' classroom experience, whether itís a basic need or something special.

It is the seventh year that STCU has offered the grant drawings, which have been greatly expanded in recent years to include more recipients. The drawings, and serving at back-to-school events, are two of the many ways STCU honors its roots as a not-for-profit credit union founded by teachers.
The Spokane Public Schools recipients were:

  • Jose Orellana, Rogers High School
  • Margaret McLane, Audubon Elementary School
  • Chynthia Bjordahl, Stevens Elementary School
  • Michelle Starkel, Libby Center
  • Jennae Martin, Lidgerwood Elementary School
  • Sharon Slawter, Audubon Elementary School
  • Eric Ruehl, Shadle Park High School
  • Holly Fernalld, Linwood Elementary School
  • Andrea Smith, Lincoln Heights Elementary School
  • Jennifer Selland, Moran Prairie Elementary School
